Charles Ferdinand Latrille, Comte de Lorencez papers, ca. 1793-1879 (bulk 1862).

Three bound volumes containing correspondence, reports, orders and lists, mostly from the period when Lorencez was Commander in Chief of the French forces in Mexico. Volumes I and II, entitled "Expédition du Mexique," contain the following divisions: "Correspondance," 1862-1865; "Correspondance diplomatique avec les plénipotentiaires," 1862; "Correspondance avec le ministre de la guerre Monsieur le Maréchal [Jacques Louis César Alexandre], Comte Randon," 1862; "Rapports divers," 1862; "Proclamation au peuple mexicain," undated; "Ordres du jour," 1862; and "Comptabilité des fonds secrets," undated. Correspondents include Jurien de la Gravière, Leonardo Márquez, Juan N. Almonte, and Alphonse Dubois de Saligny. Generals Elias Frédéric Forey and Felix Charles Douay are discussed in the correspondence. Included are letters from Lorencez describing his loss of the Battle of Cinco de Mayo at Puebla. Volume III is entitled "Lettres de service des généraux Guillaume et Ferdinand de Lorencez, Ano V-1879" and contains official documents and correspondence, mostly from the French Ministry of War, relating to the military careers of Lorencez and his father.

French general. Born May 23, 1814, in Paris, France; died 1892 in Loos, Basses Pyrénées, France. Son of General Guillaume Latrille. Charles Ferdinand Latrille, Comte de Lorencez, graduated from the Académie Militaire de Saint Cyr and later took part in the Crimean War (1853-1856), obtaining the rank of Brigadier General in 1855.
